TAYLORSVILLE, N.C. (WHKY) — Alexander County has received a $50,000 grant to determine whether additional property near the Alexander Industrial Park is suitable for future development.

County commissioners approved the grant agreement with the North Carolina Railroad Company during their Monday, August 3 meeting.

In April, commissioners approved an option-to-purchase agreement with Alexander Railroad Company involving two parcels totaling approximately 115 acres next to the industrial park. The agreement gives the county 12 months to study the property before deciding whether to purchase it.

Economic Development Director Michael Worley said the grant will help pay for environmental, ecological and other studies needed to determine whether the railroad-owned property can be developed.

Commissioners also approved an agreement with Adurra Professional Services to perform the environmental and ecological work. The studies are expected to cost between $17,000 and $22,000 and will be funded through the railroad grant.

Chairman Larry Yoder said the county is conducting its due diligence before committing local tax dollars to the possible purchase.

During the public hearing, a resident who lives near the industrial park raised concerns about noise and odors from industrial operations. Commissioner Marty Pennell said county employees have visited the area at different times to monitor noise levels.
