Alexander County Man Recently Released From Prison Faces New Charges

43-year-old James Ashley Sweet of Taylorsville was arrested last Friday (February 16) by Probation and Parole Officers in Alexander County. He was taken into custody on a warrant charging him with parole violation.

Sweet was released from prison in August, 2023 after serving more than 14 years in prison for a series of convictions. Sweet was convicted in Buncombe, Guilford, and Alexander Counties on charges including felony counts of breaking & entering, larceny, larceny of motor vehicles, breaking & entering to vehicles, and conspiracy to deliver or sell schedule II controlled substance.

According to the North Carolina Department Of Adult Correction Offender Public Information website, Sweet has a string of felony and misdemeanor convictions dating back to 1996. Most of the cases are from Alexander County. Sweet currently has charges pending in Wilkes County for felony and misdemeanor larceny. He also faces counts of misdemeanor larceny and failure to reduce speed in Alexander County.

Sweet was being held without bond in the Alexander County Detention Center. Alexander County District Court dates are scheduled for March 4 and April 2. He has a Wilkes County District Court date scheduled on March 20.
