Alexander County commissioners are considering a larger property tax cut as they continue work on the proposed 2026-2027 county budget. County Manager Justin Mundy presented a recommended budget totaling nearly $62.8 million during the June 1 board meeting. The proposal includes major funding for public safety, human services, government operations, and education.

The original budget called for a two-cent property tax reduction, but Commissioner Marty Pennell recommended cutting the rate by five cents instead. That would lower the county tax rate to 60 cents per $100 of valuation and save the owner of a $200,000 home about $100 each year.

After discussion, commissioners voted to have the county manager prepare an updated budget reflecting the larger tax cut. Major projects in the proposed budget include upgrades to EMS Station Number Two, sheriff’s office vehicles, courthouse improvements, and animal services renovations.

The board is expected to adopt the budget later this month.
