Additional Details Released On Arrest Of Catawba County Sex Offender Following Reported Vehicle, Foot Chases

52-year-old Paul Edward Ikard, Jr. of 17th Street SW in Hickory was arrested Wednesday (March 29) on charges filed by the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office and Probation & Parole. He’s charged by the Sheriff’s Office with interfere with an electronic monitoring device, failure to register as a sex offender, failure to report a new address as a sex offender, felony flee to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, felony identity theft, resisting a public officer, and reckless driving to endanger. Probation & Parole charged Ikard with parole violation. WHKY previously reported on Ikard’s arrest Wednesday, more information has been released.

On Wednesday, deputies with the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division saw a vehicle displaying a fictitious license plate. Deputies initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Hwy 127 South and Old Farm Drive. Deputies began pursuing this vehicle after it failed to stop. The fleeing vehicle crashed into an electrical pole at the intersection of Old Farm Drive and Valley Field Road.

The driver of the vehicle then fled from deputies on foot before being apprehended. When he was taken into custody the suspect provided deputies with a false name. Authorities investigated further and learned that the suspect’s correct name is Paul Edward Ikard, Jr.

Ikard is on the North Carolina Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry as a result of convictions in Catawba County in 2003 for indecent liberties with a minor and Burke County in 2007 for second-degree rape. He’s listed on the registry as an aggravated recidivist. Following Wednesday’s arrest, Ikard was jailed in the Catawba County Detention Facility under $10,000 bond on the interfering with the monitoring device count and no bond on the other charges. District Court dates are scheduled for next Monday (April 3) and April 20.
