A.G. Jackson Urges Congress To Establish Federal AI Regulations
North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson is joining a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general calling on Congress to establish federal regulations and safety standards for artificial intelligence.
According to a news release from the North Carolina Department of Justice, Jackson and 25 other attorneys general sent a letter to congressional leaders urging immediate action, citing concerns about recent AI incidents and potential threats to financial systems, critical infrastructure and national security.
The coalition is calling for federal oversight of AI safety testing, consistent performance benchmarks, transparent incident investigations and mandatory safety infrastructure.
They also want international cooperation on the pace of AI development, protections against harmful artificial intelligence and safeguards to prevent federal regulations from weakening competition or overriding existing state laws.
Jackson, who co-leads a nationwide bipartisan AI Task Force, has previously taken action involving AI-generated nonconsensual sexual images, protections for children and deepfake technology.
The attorneys general say states are already working to address AI-related risks, but federal oversight is needed as the technology continues to develop.
