9/11 Ceremonies Held Today, Parade Started In Hickory & Ended In Lenoir

On this date 19 years ago, the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington and the related plane crash in Pennsylvania occurred during the morning hours. Approximately 3,000 lives were lost on that day in 2001.

Hickory held a 9/11 ceremony on Union Square that was limited to a small amount of invited guests. There was a ceremony in Conover as well that citizens were allowed to attend, with social distancing measures in place, at the Norman B. Coley Amphitheater.

In addition, a commemorative 9/11 parade featuring fire trucks and police vehicles from Caldwell County began at Arby’s in Hickory at 8:46 a.m., then traveled north on U.S. 321 to Roby Martin Road in Lenoir. The Hickory Police Department was on hand as well and provided traffic control.
