39-year-old Melissa Dawn Starnes of Ruritan Club Road in Hudson was arrested shortly after noon yesterday (June 12) on one felony count of larceny and one misdemeanor count of larceny.
She was arrested after a Loss Prevention Officer at the Kohl’s store on Catawba Valley Boulevard in Hickory saw Starnes conceal 40 miscellaneous clothing and jewelry items and exit the store without paying.
The Officer confronted Starnes outside the store. The items, valued at nearly $1,400, were recovered.
Officers recognized Starnes from a previous shoplifting incident last month in which $620 in jewelry was stolen from the same store. Her identity was confirmed by video surveillance footage. Starnes admitted responsibility for that incident, but said she had already sold the stolen items.
Starnes was placed in the Catawba Co. Detention Facility under a $6,000 secured bond. She was scheduled to make a first appearance in District Court on the felony charge today in Newton, with another court date on the misdemeanor charge coming up on July 17 in Hickory.
