32-year-old Joshua Allen Setzer of Hindrick Street in Newton and 41-year-old Lloyd Robert McDonald of Team Sellers Road in Connelly Springs were both arrested by Hickory Police at about one o’clock yesterday afternoon (June 12) in connection to a shoplifting incident at the Wal-Mart store on Highway 70 S.E. in Hickory.
They were both charged with misdemeanor larceny; however, Setzer was also arrested on outstanding felony warrants for breaking & entering, larceny, larceny of chose in action and larceny of a motor vehicle, as well as a misdemeanor probation violation. McDonald had two outstanding misdemeanor warrants for failure to appear.
Events leading to their arrests unfolded as a Loss Prevention Officer at Wal-Mart saw Setzer and McDonald placing a Shark carpet cleaner and a Mr. Coffee machine, with a combined value of nearly $440, into a shopping cart. The two men separated and exited the store, though one man then came back inside. Loss Prevention stopped one man with the buggy while an H.P.D. Officer stopped the other.
As Setzer was questioned by the H.P.D. Officer, he dropped a white plastic bottle containing a clear, rock-like substance later determined to be methamphetamine. As a result, he was also charged with one felony count for possession of a schedule II controlled substance.
Both men have been confined in the Catawba Co. Detention Facility with bond for Setzer set at $48,500, secured, while McDonald was given a $4,000 secured bond. Setzer was due in a Newton courtroom today. McDonald will appear in District Court on July 8 in Hickory.
