25-year-old Natasha Marie Chafin of O.E. Teague Road in Taylorsville was arrested Friday (May 30) on charges of simple possession of a schedule II controlled substance, simple possession of a schedule IV controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and a felony parole violation.
She was arrested after Police were called to check on a suspicious female seated on the curb outside the Galaxy Foods store on Springs Road. She told Police she was waiting on a ride. Officers say Chafin’s speech was slurred. Police performed a routine records check and found an outstanding warrant for a parole violation.
Chafin was asked if she had any contraband on her person and she said she might have some needles. A search turned up a wooden box containing five Xanax pills and a small black bag in which were four syringes, one filled with a pink liquid later identified as oxycodone.
In a related incident, on May 31, a 39-year-old Hickory woman reported to Police that she had been at the Walgreens store on Springs Road N.E. the night before (May 30) between 9:25 and 9:40 p.m. That store is in close proximity to the Galaxy Foods store where Chafin was arrested. When the woman got back into her vehicle Friday night, she noticed the glove box was open, but didn’t think anything of it.
The next day, after realizing that some items were missing, she remembered a sign regarding video surveillance cameras at Walgreens and went back to the store to speak with the manager. They reviewed surveillance footage and saw a female entering the victim’s vehicle. The woman remained in the vehicle for just under 30 seconds.
At that point, Police were notified. The Officer remembered Chafin’s arrest from the previous night and remembered finding hair dye and checks with another woman’s name on them. Those were items that had been taken from the victim’s vehicle, along with a change purse.
Chafin was interviewed at the Catawba Co. Detention Facility, where she was incarcerated following the drug arrest. She was then charged with one felony count each of breaking & entering a motor vehicle and larceny after breaking & entering. Chafin remains in custody without bond. She was scheduled to make a first appearance in District Court today with additional court dates on July 3 & 16.
