Appalachian State Women's Soccer Edged out by ETSU

Appalachian State University women’s soccer fell to ETSU in heartbreaker fashion 1-0 in a double overtime thriller on Thursday night.

“It was a great game tonight. Both sides had highlight moments and truly battled,” said head coach Sarah Strickland. “To end in overtime is always difficult, but also a learning opportunity. We will continue to work hard, fix the mistakes we made and look forward to getting back on the field on Sunday for our home opener.”

The Mountaineers (1-1-0) tallied 16 shots and put five of them on goal. ETSU took 21 shots and put seven on goal, including the game-winner.

Hannah Short netted the game-winner in the 107th minute in the second overtime with an assist from Jasmin Dutton. The goal happened after an incredible save from Megan Roberson (Roberson, N.C./East Forsyth) to keep the game scoreless. A deflected ball went to Dutton and made a short cross to Short for the goal.

Roberson played the entire game and made four saves on the night. Jane Cline (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) led the team with four shots, including three on goal.

Appalachian will play its home opener on Sunday against Liberty at Appalachian Soccer Stadium in Boone. Kick off is set for 1 p.m.
