Inside the Park Home Run Gives Crawdads Win

Evan Van Hoosier hits inside the park home run to secure Crawdads win Evan Van Hoosier hits inside the park home run to secure Crawdads win Hickory Crawdads

The Hickory Crawdads benefitted from one of baseball's rarest plays for the second time in a week Wednesday night, as Evan Van Hoosier lined a go-ahead, inside the park, 2-run home run in the 8th inning to lift the 'Dads to a 3-2 win over the Lakewood BlueClaws at FirstEnergy Park.

Van Hoosier, who also went deep on a ball that didn't leave the park in the Crawdads 3-1 win in Augusta on August 20th, turned a one-run deficit for Hickory into a one-run lead with his 2-run shot in the 8th. Van Hoosier's homer started as a line drive to deep center field off of Lakewood reliever Nick Rodesky. BlueClaws center fielder Aaron Brown reached the ball on a full sprint just before slamming into the wall, a collision that dislodged the ball from his glove and allowed Van Hoosier and Luis Marte to both round the bases for the two-run big fly.

The homer was the second big extra base hit by Van Hoosier on the night, as the All-Star outfielder tripled to left field and came in to score on a wild pitch in the 1st inning to give the 'Dads an early 1-0 lead. The advantage held until the bottom of the 3rd, when 'Claws third baseman Mitch Walding clubbed the first pitch of the inning from Crawdads starting pitcher Yohander Mendez over the right field wall for a game-tying solo home run.

Lakewood broke up the deadlocked score in the 6th on a 2-out, RBI double from Andrew Knapp to give the BlueClaws a 2-1 lead prior to Van Hoosier's go-ahead blast in the 8th.

Van Hoosier finished the game 2-4 with his 8th triple of the year, 11th homer, 2 RBI, and two runs scored. Marte ended the night 1-3 with a walk and a run scored.

The late offense made a winner out of Hickory reliever Anyelo Lecerlc (3-4) who threw 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen with four strikeouts. Rodesky (0-1) took the loss for Lakewood with two runs allowed on two hits, two walks, and three strikeouts. Jose Valdespina (8) picked up the save for the 'Dads with a perfect 9th inning including two strikeouts.

The Crawdads (36-29) will go for the 3-game sweep over the BlueClaws (23-40) on Thursday, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
