The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team (13-28) took control early with a seven-run first inning en route to a 13-6 victory over Winston-Salem State (27-14) Wednesday evening at Bears Field.
The first inning for the Bears was capped off by a bases-clearing triple from junior designated hitter Brantley Rumford (Rock Hill, S.C.).
The Rams closed to gap to 7-6 but the Bears put the contest away with a four-run fourth inning which included two-run singles from freshman first baseman David Newcomer (Archdale, N.C.) and junior catcher Read Brown (Indian Trail, N.C.).
Newcomer added three hits and three runs batted in on the night as Lenoir-Rhyne pounded out 17 hits in winning their second straight game and avenging an earlier loss to Winston-Salem State.
On the mound, freshman John Curtis (Lenoir, N.C.) (1-5) earned his first victory on the year for the Bears after pitching over three innings of scoreless innings in relief while striking out six batters.
For Winston-Salem State, Connor Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.) drove in a pair of runs while Jordan Carlton (Wilkesboro, N.C.) fell to 4-2 after taking the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Friday against Mars Hill at home beginning at 6:00 p.m.
